A Hint on the VP Choice

The greatest guessing game since last week is the choice of John McCain's VP pick.

The TV guys have their theories; I have mine. But I also have apiece of evidence that they have overlooked.

Mitt Romney is everybody's even money favorite. He's experienced, he knows how to campaign, he doesn't have white hair.

Tim Pawlenty of MN is in the right place -- a swing state --, is a governor and is younger than McCain. (OK, everybody is younger than McCain.)

But here's one that has been on the list that is my pick -- Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison of TX. She is more accomplished than Hillary and is a strong conservative.

There' are three facts to consider:

A Hutchison pick would strengthen McCain with the GOP's right wing.

The McCain camp is reaching out to the lunchbox liberals, former Hillary supporters, that want to vote for a women.

But the final piece of the puzzle came in an e-mail yesterday, announcing that Mullings, the political commentary column from Rich Galen, would return next week. Galen had gone to work in the Senate office of Hutchison and was prohibited from charing for political commentary.
Apparently that has changed which could mean that he will be moving to the campaign side.

Could it be? Political clues can be rather small. We'll see about noontime.
