Comparing The Rhetoric

In last year's presidential campaign some commentators attempted to compare Barak Obama's oratory to that of Ronald Reagan. While Obama couldn't carry Reagan's thesaurus, the young president can make a good speech.

Now if he had something to say.

One expects the President of the United States to stand on the "bully pulpit" of the presidency to lead, to inspire and motivate the citizens. But Obama's speech hasn’t changed much from his political stump speech…. The economy is rotten, we're going downhill, it's Bush's fault.

Well, we are more than a month into the Obama presidency and if the rhetoric could fix things the Dow would be going up. Yet each time Obama speaks the Dow drops again.

Isn't there something good he can say? Perhaps not, if you look at the targets of each of the initiatives undertaken by the administration.

Tax cuts will be going to people who don't pay taxes.

Mortgage assistance will be going to people who can't pay their bills.

Welfare assistance will go to unwed mothers like the California octuplet mom who can't afford to support the children she now has, yet has ore.

Instead of being a nation of promise and opportunity as described in the speeches of Ronald Reagan, the new administration is crafting a nation of whiners, losers, deadbeats and tax cheats.

No comparison.
